Glen Perotte – Mount Kenya's Rooted Resilience
NovemBer 08 - December 06
In this new series of photographs Perotte explores the flora of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second highest mountain after Kilimanjaro and a uniquely special place. Mount Kenya is god’s mountain, a locus for the spiritual life of many of the ethnic tribes in the area who believe god came down from the sky to live on its peak amongst the clouds. The focus for Perotte is the astonishing plant life that manages to take root in this volcanic and harsh landscape of thin air and rocky terrain, sometimes by banding together and at other times finding a small niche to settle in alone. Strange, yet wonderfully captivating, these botanical wonders exhibit adaptations honed over millennia to survive the harsh mountain environment.
Glen Perotte is an international photographer who has worked in New York, London and is now based in Jersey. Perotte has shown at the Barbican London, The Association of Photographers Gallery and the Royal Photographic Society, Bristol. Glen returns to CCA Galleries International for his third solo exhibition with an exciting body of new work.

*NEW EXHIBITION ANNOUNCEMENT*
Next Thursday sees the opening of ‘Art Clash’, our new exhibition at CCA International.
Nineteen Jersey based artists have been invited to respond to a selection of work by internationally renowned artists to create a dynamic group show opening on Thursday 12th December.
The idea was inspired by the concept of a Soundclash, a radical musical event during which sound artists improvise in response to their fellow players to create situations that spark creativity by clashing or flowing sounds.
For the exhibition we have invited Jersey based artists, sculptors, poets and dancers and paired them with a selection of artworks. The responses can flow with the work or clash with it, bounce off it, interrogate it, delve deeper, respond conceptually or play with it - anything but copy it!
The PV will take place next Thursday, 14th December at 5.30pm and the show will continue until 31st January 2025.
Watch this space for more information coming soon!

Perotte delves into the spiritual wonders of Mount Kenya in Africa through a series of beautifully shot photographs.
Often referred to as ‘God’s mountain’, Mount Kenya is a locus for the spiritual life of many of the ethnic tribes in the area who believe god came down from the sky to live on its peak amongst the clouds. @kay_leseelleur’s painting ‘Oh Camilla Let Me Count The Ways I Love Thee’ humorously depicts Charles and Camila on the right of the frame, with Charles saying “Oh Camilla let me count the ways I love thee to the depth and…” while what appears to be a Queen (her hat says ‘off with their heads’) glances back at them whilst riding away on a donkey with a giant bird.
A red man in the foreground pushes the donkey, perhaps to make way for the new King and Queen, as other human and bird characters look on.
When asked what the tiny circles in the negative spaces represent, Kay said they “are probably there to ‘knit’ the unruly composition together”.

In her painting ‘Earth, a Disgrace to the Galaxy’ @kay_leseelleur presents a satirical scene with dark undertones as she comments on ongoing wars all over the world. Two winged beings - presumably angels or those from a different planet - look at what appears to be a screen showing Earth with explosions coming from it. Markers show the names of countries in conflict, while the characters talk to each other discussing the fact that Earth is a ‘disgrace to the galaxy’ despite being given all we ‘needed’ (for survival).
One of the angels humorously comments ‘I think we should go in and make adjustments to the male brain’, proposing the common view that it’s predominantly men who are responsible for the worldwide war.

Today’s featured work by @kay_leseelleur from her current solo exhibition ‘Curiosity Didn’t Kill the Cat’ takes its title from a famous quote by the late French poet Paul Valéry.
‘“War, a Massacre of People Who Don’t Know Each Other, for the Profit of People Who Know Each Other, but Don’t Kill Each Other”, Paul Valéry,’ features half-painted figures on both sides, each facing towards the centre of the composition at what appears to be an angel standing in between two buildings. Another angel lies on the floor, arms outstretched towards a tooth-bearing white dog. Some of the figures strike weapons as if suggesting a fight; others watch in astonishment at the events taking place before them. The backdrop is jet black, perhaps suggesting death and distruction. Valéry’s quote frames the piece in words hand-written by the artist, reinforcing the message.
With this piece Kay brings Valéry’s words to life via her strange and intriguing world while commenting on the harsh reality of war.

Today is #NationalPoetryDay so we thought it was the perfect day to share a few poems put together by Shirley MacWilliam during our ‘The Importance of Being Titled’ event a couple of weeks ago, created purely from the titles of @kay_leseelleur’s paintings.
During the talk, Shirley explored Kay’s descriptive titles which play a large part in the works themselves, delving into the artist’s wonderful world and sophisticated imagination.
Shirley explained: “In order to enjoy something of the overall wonderment of the titles I have irreverently pieced them together into little poem-like sequences. This is s very unorthodox thing to do and I hope Kay will forgive it…. but really poetry and insight is all in the titles.”
She then went on to read out ten short poems, three of which can be seen in the images above.
